Mountain Top Removal in the Appalachian Region
01/17/2005
Mountain top removal is a method of mining that literally blows away
the top of an entire mountain. It's a technique for mining that has
been growing in use in the Appalachian region, especially in West
Virginia.
Opponents
of mountain top removal see this technique as a new front in the
struggle against the coal robber-barons who have both dominated the
region and exploited it since the 1800's. Residents of the mountain are
forced off of their land, mountain streams are destroyed with
contaminated by-products of the coal mining process, and
mercury, arsenic, and many other toxins are introduced into the
ecosystem.

Public Transit Fare Hikes, Service Cuts and Lay-Offs to start on February 1st
12/16/2004
The battle to save Allegheny County public transit reached a climax today, Thursday, December 16th, when the Port Authority Board of Directors met to decide how it would resolve the $75 million dollar shortfall in its 2004 and 2005 fiscal year budgets. As many as 130 public transit riders and their supporters packed the Port Authority Board room in Downtown Pittsburgh to hear the long awaited decision.
In the end, the Port Authority board settled on a
two-phase proposal that will ultimately raise fares to $2.50, cut service in dozens of routes, limit night-time and weekend service in others, and lay-off 500 employees "on or around" July 1, 2005.
