Protesters oppose Iams' cruel tests on dogs and cats

Protesters served as a voice for the debarked voiceless on October 15th in a lunch-hour protest against Iams. People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) members and local activists educated the public about the cruelty of Iams' unnecessary "nutritional" tests on dogs and cats.

Iams uses dogs and cats in unnecessary animal experimentats for its pet food products, often violating its own welfare policy with utter disregard for the test victims. Iams researchers have snipped dogs' vocal chords, shoved tubes down their throats to force them to ingest vegetable oil, and removed dogs' thigh muscles only to leave them on cold concrete floors in buildings without temperature control.

Coinciding with national Love Your Body Day on Wednesday, October 20, Yinz Cheer, Pittsburgh’s radical cheerleading group, took action against negative body image promotion and the diet industry’s attack on women’s self esteem through street theatre performances downtown throughout the lunch hour.

Indymedia's hardware is returned; call for solidarity

op hard drive-by On Wednesday, October 13th, Indymedia's seized hardware was mysteriously returned in the same way it disappeared -- without any information provided as to who took it or why, and on whose orders. An employee at Rackspace, the U.S.-based web hosting company that handed over Indymedia's disks to the U.S. government on 7 October, emailed an Indymedia volunteer to say that the disks were returned and that "the court order is being complied with... I will pass along any more information that becomes available and that I am allowed to." Then on Thursday, October 14th, Italy Indymedia learned that an investigation in Bologna could have precipitated the U.S.' order for the seizure of Indymedia's hard drives from the UK.

Meanwhile, Indymedia volunteers are now calling for supporters to sign a solidarity declaration denouncing the hard drive seizure as an unacceptable attack on press freedom, freedom of expression, and privacy. They are demanding a full disclosure of the names of organizations and individuals involved in the seizure, a copy of the court order, and an independent investigation into any violations of due process.

Patriot Act Town Meeting Brings Together Residents of Edgewood and Neighboring Communities

Aproximately 40 people attended an informational meeting to hear about the USA Patriot Act and ask questions of panelists.

The program was organized by a group of Edgewood residents and a resident of neighboring Swissvale. Program organizers hoped to increase peoples' understanding of the Patriot Act and initiate discussion as to whether the community might want pass a Patriot-Act related resolution, as have Pittsburgh and nearby Wilkinsburg.

DA refuses to prosecute police who shot and killed Bernard Rogers

rogers On Friday, October 8, Allegheny County District Attorney Stephen A. Zappala announced that he will not prosecute the police responsible for the shooting death of Bernard Rogers. This decision comes as a blow to Rogers' survivors and to People Against Police Violence who have spent almost two years fighting for justice in this case. According to Zappala's press release, "After thorough investigation and protracted public proceedings, substantial evidence indicates that ... Bernard Rogers sustained a fatal chest wound when he assaulted [the officers] and became involved in a struggle over an officer's weapon." But there are reasons why Zappala's conclusion may be highly questionable.
