One Arrest at Bush Protest
12/02/2003

Approximately 250 protestors rallied outside a $2,000 / plate fundraising dinner for George Bush at the Westin Convention Center Downtown this afternoon. One protestor was arrested.

Protestors included members of the Steel Workers Union, anti-war activists, and environmentalists upset at Bush's anti-environment record. Inside, campaign contributors took advantage of the recent campaign finance reform law to donate $2,000 apiece to Bush's campaign. Prior to the law's passage, the limit was $1,000, still far out of the range of most working class Americans.

About 10 pro-Bush protestors heckled the main protest, shouting profanities at the crowd, but were drowned out by the much-larger anti-Bush contingent.

Pennsylvania Residents Demand Death Penalty Moratorium
10/12/2003
Hundreds of Pennsylvanians rallied in Harrisburg on Saturday 11 October, calling for an end to executions in the state. The rally, part of Amnesty International's global day against the death penalty, was co-sponsored by the American Civil Liberties Union, A United Method Witness in Pennsylvania, the Episcopal Diocese of Pennsylvania, the Pennsylvania Council of Churches, the Civil Rights Committee of the Philadelphia Bar Association, and R.E.M.

Since the reinstatement of the death penalty in 1972, six people in Pennsylvania alone have later been found to be innocent due to incontrovertible evidence. In the entire country: 109.

"It's no longer a question of whether you are for the death penalty or against it," said former Attorney General Ernie Preate. "It's whether you are for or against justice, for or against fairness."
