IUP STUDENT/FACULTY WALKOUT IN THE EVENT OF WAR

In the event of war with Iraq, antiwar students and faculty at Indiana University of Pennsylvania will walk out of classes on the day war begins.

Indiana Voices for Peace, a campus-community coalition, is planning a walk out and other activities to observe the event, provide information to the public, and promote peace.

A peace vigil will be held on the Indiana University of Pennsylvania campus on the day that war begins. On the following day, a Convergence of Conscience and candlelight vigil will be held at the Hadley Union Building (HUB) on campus. Local citizens, students, faculty, and university staff are encouraged to participate.

On the day that war begins, air horns will signal the commencement of war. Members of Indiana Voices for Peace will, as a matter of conscience, will leave class and join the vigil in the Oak Grove. A peace vigil in the Oak Grove will begin immediately.

EVENTS ON DAY FOLLOWING WAR

On the day following the war, Indiana Voices for Peace will hold the Convergence of Conscience at the Hadley Union Building (HUB). This is an all-day event from 9:00 am to 9:00 pm. Programs include an interfaith Pray for Peace room, discussion forums, information table, and a creative expressions room.

The concluding event will be a candlelight vigil will be held in front of the HUB from 7:00-8:00 pm.

One of the discussion forums, “Support Our Troops Now and Later,” will be moderated by Anthony Bezich, an IUP graduate student and former Army captain. A self-described "right-wing patriot" who voted for George Bush in 2000, he opposes military action against Iraq as "immoral, unnecessary, and dangerous."

"We (Indiana Voices for Peace) oppose this war, but we support the warriors, our countrymen and kinsmen in uniform."

"The best way we can support our troops," he claims, "is to bring them home now."
