Workers' Rights are Human Rights!
On December 10th, International Human Rights Day, the AFL-CIO, Jobs with Justice and Independent Unions are holding a national day of action on the right to organize and collectively bargain.
December 10th is the day that Eleanor Roosevelt signed the Universal Declaration of Human Rights on behalf of the United States in 1948. This document as well as the National Labor Relations Act grants workers the right to form and join trade unions, yet that right is commonly denied in the United States. Workers that attempt to organize today are "spied on, harrassed, pressured, threatened, suspended, fired, deported or otherwise victimized..." according to a recent Human Rights Watch report.
In Pittsburgh, the United Steelworkers of America, the Service Employees International Union Local 3, the Allegheny County Labor Council and Pittsburgh Jobs with Justice are sponsoring a "Workers' Rights Tour" to highlight violations of workers' rights right here in our hometown.
Buses will leave from the Steelworkers' Building downtown (corner of Blvd of the Allies and Stanwix St.) at 8:30am and will return there at approximately 12 noon.
For more information or to get a seat on the bus, call Matt Richards at 412-471-8919 or Dewitt Walton at 412-562-2290.
