On today's show...

We're also available on the internet, both on WRCT's live webstream at W-R-C-T dot ORG and for download, stream or podcast at radio dot I-N-D-Y-P-G-H dot org.
We turn now to our first feature story.
[37:30] Alcatraz Unthanksgiving
Alcatraz Island, located in the San Francisco Bay, is a former military fortification turned federal prison and subsequently reshaped into a recreation area.
The romanticized tales fed to visiting tourists obscure both the history of indigenous peoples on the island and the effects of US colonialism and the prison industrial complex on North America's indigenous peoples. Likewise the histories and struggles of Native American people are concealed by the mainstream myths of Thanksgiving.
With that in mind, we bring you Unthanksgiving: Indigenous People's Thanksgiving, a collection of interviews about the island of Alcatraz and the relationship of indigenous people to Thanksgiving. The program was produced by Pedro Reyes for Free Radio Alcatraz at KPFA and was recorded on November 23, 2005.

[21:30] Wennemen Wintu Struggles
The Wennemen Wintu are a Native Tribe in Southern California who have been struggling to preserve their traditions and cultures in the face of modernization. One setback to the tribe came in the early 1940's with the construction of the Shasta Dam. Sixty years later, plans to increase the size of the dam will cause further destruction of the Wennemen Wintu's tribal lands and also threaten the survival of their cultural practices. Alan Stahler of KMVR in Nevada City, California brings us this story:
