At the AFL-CIO Convention, Leaders Ask: What Direction for Labor?
Mark Vorpahl
2013-09-12 12:23 PM
The acknowledgment of Labor’s existential crisis and the recognition that something must be done to resolve it is the key issue at the AFL-CIO’s four-day quadrennial convention in Los Angeles. The urgency of the situation has compelled Labor’s top officials to experiment in a search for solutions. (text/html)

Obama’s War Grows as Support Shrinks
Shamus Cooke
2013-09-10 11:02 AM
Some careful listening has exposed the lie that a U.S. attack (war) against Syria would be, as Obama put it, “a shot across the bow,” i.e. a “tiny war.” But even before the first missile is launched the birth of Obama’s baby war began to grow, and when it’s eventually unleashed it will resemble any other fully matured war, complete with massive destruction, the death of untold innocents and yet another Middle Eastern nation torn to pieces. What Can We Learn from 25 Years of Jobs with Justice?
Mark Vorpahl
2013-09-06 8:35 AM
It’s no secret that the last 30 years have seen a brutal corporate assault on U.S. workers. Incomes and union membership rates have plummeted, unemployment is soaring, and the two corporate parties have joined forces to go after our previously untouchable historic gains. (text/html)

Declaring Syria Regime Illegitimate Sends Strong Human Rights Message and Exposes Lenders
Jennifer Tong
2013-09-03 8:28 PM
Over the last year, a religious antipoverty organization has met with U.S. Treasury and White House officials to encourage them to declare the Syrian government of President Bashar al-Assad an illegitimate government. This action would impose restrictions on lending to Syria that supports its military or the needs of the Assad regime. When governments or financial institutions make this declaration it lets lenders know that if they lend to Syria they may not receive a return on their investment. Types of lending and financing that could be affected are arms contracts with Russia and oil investment from Iran. (text/plain)
How the U.S. Political Left is Failing Over Syria
Shamus Cooke
2013-09-02 1:18 PM
It’s now painfully clear that Obama’s war on Syria is a replay of Bush’s march to war in Iraq, both built on lies. Zero evidence has been put forth that proves the Syrian government used chemical weapons. On the contrary, evidence has been recorded that suggests the U.S.-backed Syrian rebels are responsible for the attack. (text/plain)
The Lie of “Limited” War Against Syria
Shamus Cooke
2013-09-01 2:39 AM
The rats are jumping ship. Obama’s strongest allies can’t stomach the stench of lies that are the foundation of the war effort against Syria. Even England, whose entire foreign policy is reduced to asking “how high?” when the U.S. says “jump,” opted to stay grounded for Obama’s war drive. (text/plain)

War With Syria and Its Repercussions
Shamus Cooke
2013-08-28 2:15 PM
A U.S. invasion of Syria could be the first war based on a YouTube video. After a video was released showing victims of an alleged chemical weapons attack, England immediately declared the Syrian government responsible, while Obama began drawing up military plans, saying there was “little doubt” the Syrian Government was at fault (zero evidence currently exists to suggest this). An extra U.S. warship has already been deployed in response. (text/plain)
Why Mass Marches Still Matter: 2013’s March on Washington
Mark Vorpahl

The AFL-CIO’s New Strategy: Inspiration or Hype?
Shamus Cooke
2013-08-27 5:07 AM
After years of embarrassing denial, the AFL-CIO recently took its first baby step in addressing the crisis that has engulfed organized labor: it recognized there was a problem. In the run up to its national convention in early September in Los Angles, AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka recently admitted that “what we’ve been doing isn’t working,” and consequently announced a new strategy that was, supposedly, a revolutionary break from the previously-failed strategy of organized labor. A Man on a Limb: A Short Analysis of the Current Economic Crisis
Brad Forrest
2013-08-21 5:49 AM
The current crisis of the global capitalist system is shaping up to be one of the worst since the Great Depression of the 1930’s. U.S. Gross Domestic Product grew by an anemic 1.8 percent in the first quarter of 2013, and only 0.4 the previous quarter. U.S. capitalists and their political representatives in the Democratic and Republican parties have got themselves in a real mess, with no end in sight. (text/plain)
Norwegian Audit Finds Loans to Developing Countries Don’t Follow New Lending Standards
Jennifer Tong
2013-08-19 2:07 PM
Last week, Norway became the first lending country to audit the loans it made to developing countries. The consultant firm Deloitte assessed whether past Norwegian loans to governments, including repressive regimes in Egypt and Indonesia, were compliant with current principles of responsible lending and borrowing developed by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD). Friday, August 16 marked the 40th consecutive day of a multi-ethnic statewide prisoner hunger strike initiated from inside the Security Housing Unit (SHU) of California's Pelican Bay State Prison. As the horror of solitary confinement comes under increasing scrutiny in the US and around the world, human rights activists are confronting this public health and safety epidemic from a variety of angles. One group, called Architects/Designers/Planners for Social Responsibility has... (image/jpeg)
