At midnight on December 2, 1984, 27 tons of lethal gases leaked from Union Carbide's pesticide factory in Bhopal, India, immediately killing an estimated 8,000 people and poisoning thousands of others. Today in Bhopal, at least 150,000 people, including children born to parents who survived the disaster, are suffering from exposure-related health effects such as cancer, neurological damage, chaotic menstrual cycles and mental illness. Coinciding with the recent 20th anniversary of the Bhopal disaster, Jack Doyle came out with a new book "Trespass Against Us: Dow Chemical and the Toxic Century" (Common Courage Press, 2004). On May 1, the international workers’ holiday of May Day, members of the local group Pittsburgh Anti-Sweatshop Community Alliance, or PASCA, spoke to Pirates fans outside PNC Park about making concienscious sports-fan apparel choices. They distributed a new edition of their anti-sweatshop baseball cards as a part of the campaign to pressure the Pittsburgh Pirates and Major League Baseball to enforce labor standards for their licensed merchandise in the same way that many Universities have done.
