Major AFL-CIO Union, SEIU, Has New Local Leadership in the “Cradle of Liberty” Philly Home Team 2004-01-05 10:03 PM
Just in time to ring in the New Year, new local union leadership has been elected in Philadelphia, the “Cradle of Liberty”. On December 13, members of Local 36 of the 1.6 million-member Service Employees International Union (SEIU), one of the largest in the AFL-CIO, elected a new president, secretary-treasurer and 23 Executive Board members. This came in the 18th month of a national SEIU trusteeship over Local 36, which represents over 4,300 janitors, building maintenance workers, technicians and professionals in Philadelphia and its suburbs in Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Throughout the quest of searching for solutions I evolved from being purely idealistic, and more often than not counter productive, to finding practical applications based on successful models that have actually been implemented and utilized around the world. We are living in the past if we think the voting public is not ready to elect a progressive, populist President. This is not the past. Dean's way is precisely the WRONG approach. Heck, look what Dean did to Vermont - he took a 74% re-elect rate and whittled it down to 50.4% in 2000, before quitting in 2002 to "run for President" while the ranks of "progressives" and republicans grew in Vermont until no Democrat could get elected, and his own Lt.
