Once it is remembered that Big Insurance is the biggest investment bloc on Wall Street...and that customers' supposed Health Care money may be thereby invested in even industries that caused ones disease, a lot becomes clear. Rendell works for Wall Street, not public health. (text/plain)

Picket line in New York City protests repression of striking miners in Cananea, MX
NEW YORK, 12 January -- The attack by over 800 state and federal police and Mexican army soldiers, aimed at dislodging striking miners from Cananea (Sonora state), was answered with a protest picket in New York. In front of the Mexican consulate, some 20 demonstrators proclaimed their solidarity with the mineworkers, who have been on strike since July 30 against terrible safety conditions at the Cananea complex and against government attacks on the workers. It is essential to understand the real scope of the assassination policy of Left activists pursued, after the 1992 crisis, by the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP), its military arm, the New People’s Army (NPA) and its politico-diplomatic arm, the National Democratic Front (NDF). text Friar Louis Cappio must live Cesar Benjamin 2008-01-06 4:31 AM
The Brazilian semi-arid is immense: 912 thousand square km. It is populous: 22 million people in rural areas. It is the most rainy of the planet: 750 mm / year, on average, which corresponds to 760 billion cubic meters of rainfall per year. It is not true, therefore, that there is no water there. The nature provides it, but it is wasted: the waters evaporate quickly, under the strong sun, or go soon away, running on the crystalline waterproof ground. (text/plain)

FYI: Michael Moore on Iowa Vote and the War
Looks like a good number of antiwar youth have entered the electoral arena whether folks here think it a waste of time or not. What's worth pondering is how one best forms an alliance with THEM for antiwar activity during and after the campaign. Hint: Not by denouncing their champion as a same-as-Bush advocate of war and them as fools and suckers. --CarlD (image/jpeg)

The Case for Socialized Medicine in the United States, and the Struggle to Achieve It
The California Nurses Association/National Nurses Organizing Committee blasted insurance giant CIGNA for failing to approve a liver transplant one week earlier for 17-year-old Nataline Sarkisyan, who tragically died just hours after CIGNA relented and agreed to the procedure following a massive national outcry. “CNA/NNOC Executive Director Rose Ann DeMoro called the final outcome ‘a horrific tragedy that demonstrates what is so fundamentally wrong with our health care system today. Insurance companies have a stranglehold on our health. Their first priority is to make profits for their shareholders – and the way they do that is by denying care." "It is simply not possible to organize major protests every time a multi-billion corporation like CIGNA denies care that has been recommended by a physician," DeMoro said. “Having insurance is not the same as receiving needed care. We need a fundamental change in our healthcare system that takes control away from the insurance giants and places it where it belongs – in the hands of the medical professionals, the patients, and their families." image FYI: Nader throws support to Edwards Repost by CarlD 2008-01-01 5:39 PM
FYI: Nader throws support to Edwards
While I'd go for Kucinich or Richardson in round one, it's interesting that Nader goes for the candidate closer to him on strategic matters, and also professionally as an anti-corporate trial lawyer, than those closer to him tactically on the issues of the day, such as the war, or closer to those in at least part of his base, the Greens who like Kucinich, such as myself. But then I never liked how Nader played footsie with Pat Buchanan on trade, either. I never blamed him, though, for Gore's defeat, since I believe our vote belongs to each of us, and not any political bloc, and the candidates' task is to win it, if they can. Anyway, by that logic, one should blame Monica Moorehead, the Workers World Party candidate. She got double the amount of votes in Florida than Bush's supposed margin over Gore. (image/jpeg)
