Pittsburgh—“Science is Sadism” cried one sign outside of the University of Pittsburgh’s Biology center where rhesus monkeys are routinely tortured in the name of science. Five to eight animal rights activists gathered outside of Langley Hall to protest what they see as blatant cruelty to innocent animals.
The demonstrators made several points, including that students’ tuition money is routinely used to fund such research, a fact that many students aren’t aware of. The representatives from Pitt’s Voices for Animal Liberation (animals+@pitt.edu) and Animal Advocates hope to grow as a result of the information they disseminated at the action. While not expecting to have a great impact on researchers, they usually see an increased interest in their campaigns due to their actions.
The protest coincided with Ohio National Primate Week, which is from August 24 to September 1st. The week’s activities will culminate in a candlelight vigil in front of the William Pitt Union on September 1st at 8PM.
