Breakaway Marchers with "No Blood for Oil" Banner

This photo shows the breakaway march which took place after the mass march and rally, while other protesters remained near the Software Engineering Institute in a peaceable "die-in." Here, the marchers head down Fifth Avenue. The "No Blood for Oil" banner led the group throughout the march.

No Blood For Oil
by requirethis Sunday, Jan. 26, 2003 at 5:08 PM

Wow. I guess the No Blood For Oil people are the true vanguard now that they "led" the breakaway march. I wasn't there, but it looks like Roots Action Group as well as others played a pretty important part. I look forward to reading a story on this.

Is the No Blood For Oil "group" related to the NY organization?

Sorry if that was harsh. Your wording choice could have been better where describing some anarchist marchers. Perhaps you meant that the banner was in the front for the entire march (but then I wonder why it was necessary to state this).

i think you misread
by andy Sunday, Jan. 26, 2003 at 5:14 PM

nowhere does this say that there was a No Blood for Oil "group". it says the No Blood for Oil "banner." banners and groups are not the same. and i believe what was meant by "led" was "preceded." there was no "vanguard," thank you.

Apology
by requirethis Sunday, Jan. 26, 2003 at 5:18 PM

OK, I'm sorry. When I referred to group, I meant those carrying the banner (who were also perhaps affiliated with the NY group of the same name which was an endorser of the day's events). Good work today, Indymedia!

yeah . . .

it's cool . . . word choices sometimes do make all the difference, which is why i was put off by your initial comment . . . i'm not sure if the people with the sign were part of that group, they may have been. i just wanted to clear up that there was no vanguard group today- just a LOT of really dedicated people who made for a great demo : )

Clarification

My apologies for a very weak choice of word. The banner was visible from in front of the group for most, if not almost all, of the duration of the "breakaway" march. This is noteworthy, in my opinion as a firsthand observer, because it was probably the clearest indication to passers-by in cars of the purpose of the march. I found the amount of support which onlookers both on foot and in vehicles showed for the marchers (honking, waving, cheering) to be impressive.

bloc - die in folx united!
by greedkills Sunday, Jan. 26, 2003 at 9:52 PM

The people in that breakaway march were in total solidarity with the folks at the die in. There must be room for every group in this movement to do their thing. That is what the whole "movement" thing is.

ok why don't you listen to someone who participated in th breakway march. we marched to make a point, to stop traffic. we did this successfuly. the no blood for oil banner was being carried by volunteers. in fact it changed hands many times.

stopping traffic?
by bikedude Monday, Jan. 27, 2003 at 6:24 PM

if yinz were marching to stop traffic, then isn't it a bit of a contradiction...causing cars to waste fuel while waiting for you to walk down the road? i bet you had a better reason to have a breakoff march than to stop traffic.

rationale for snake march
by unpermittedmarcher Monday, Jan. 27, 2003 at 8:00 PM

There are several reasons that such phenomena as the breakaway march on Sunday occur. Primarily, since it is rather apparent that there is a major contradiction involved in asking the government for permission to protest the government's policies, several protesters would prefer to march explicitly without government approval.
Second, as perhaps demonstrated better by Saturday's unpermitted march back to the starting point, such an action is a direct expression of the "power of the people." One who takes part in a resistive action experiences this sense of power and solidarity, which is very moving and perhaps the best motivator for future actions. We will get nowhere if people continue to forget that we hold the real power...there are no systems without our cooperation or complicity.
Also, in regards to the wasting of fuel in a traffic line... I agree it is an unfortunate consequence; however not one of any significant gravity. The people in their cars were awakened (a) to the power and presence of the anti-war movement, (b) to the inconvenience of automobile driving (gee, I wish I had taken the train/bus/subway/bike, or even yes, walked), (c) and it exposed them to how easy it is to cripple the transportation infrastructure of a major city. It is lamentable nonetheless that those most affected were working class people on their day off. However, we cannot be afraid to express our message for fear of merely inconveniencing others.

Stopping it for a moment

Yes, just to add that when you can bring the culture that you're working to dismantle to a stop for a minute, an hour, or any length of time, a victory is won.

by joe hill Monday, Jan. 27, 2003 at 9:29 PM

hi

i'm in the roots action group and, yes, we did march in the bloc. however, we seem to have misplaced our banner. if anybody happens to have it, could you please give it to the kids in pog, or notify us (rag@mutualaid.org). we would greatly appreciate it because we'd like to use the banner for future actions.

and thanks to everybody who came out this past weekend. especially those of you who dressed up like ninjas. we had a great time.

yours, in solidarity

I WAS AT THE MARCH AND I JUST WANTED TO COMMENT ON THE FACT THAT IT WAS GREAT WHAT THE BREAK AWAY MARCH DID. THERE NEEDED TO BE SOME FORM OF DEFIANCE THE MARCH TO GET THE POINT ACROSS THAT WE WILL NOT STAND FOR THIS WAR.
