Students at Pitt are organizing a day of student strike and teach-ins/workshops to occur the day after war is escalated in Iraq.
A group of students at Pitt is organizing a day of student strike and student/faculty teach-ins and workshops on the war in Iraq for the day after bombing is escalated in Iraq (when "war is declared," or whatever they decide to call it).
We're looking for groups to put together a teach-in or
workshop on something relating to this war and their specific group's focus. For example, Indymedia will do a teach-in on the corporate media and its role
playing up war. PItt's CWO might do something relating to women and war, or women in Iraq, and how bombing them really won't help their situation. The idea is to fill the open spaces at Pitt with Pitt students and faculty and other university (and high school!) students and faculty who are taking a day off from class to learn about what really matters in this
time of crisis.
The subject, exact time and place of your workshop are all up to you. We're figuring on using open places like the Posvar Hall lobby, Lawrence Lobby, and the open spaces in the Union. We're suggesting these two things:
- That you do your teach-in/workshop twice during the day, in case there is overlap, so that people don't have to miss your workshop for another and vice versa.
- That, if you can, you give the people who come to your teach-in/workshop something tangible that they can do- preferably something they can do by themselves or with a few friends- that can make a difference in relation to your subject.
If you can, try to have your event together by next Monday (the 10th) so that we can all be ready. (It's a matter of weeks, not months!) So, if the bombing is escalated, say, tomorrow, it obviously won't happen. At least in this form.
When you know for sure what you're doing, email me the information and we'll put together a comprehensive schedule for the day. At the end of the
day we're hoping to get everyone together for a "town hall meeting" to discuss what we as a student and faculty community in Pittsburgh can do to stop the war.
If you aren't putting together a workshop but want to attend, keep your eye on indymedia or email me for more information!
