One Arrest at a24
by marchrr Sunday, Aug. 24, 2003 at 12:47 PM

Police made one arrest during an unpermitted march through Oakland against the occupation of Iraq.

The march began shortly after 3 pm, and proceeded through Carnegie Mellon Campus, after the Pittsburgh Organizing Group and the Thomas Merton Center had a picnic and rally against the occupation of Iraq at Flagstaff Hill in Schenley Park. Led by a banner reading "Stop All War," about 130 marchers stepped onto Forbes Ave and onto Morewood, then turned left on Fifth. As the march approached Oakland, more and more police vehicles gathered ahead and behind the march. Police gave an order to disperse behind the march, and exiting their vehicles, shouted, and gestured for people to get on the sidewalk. The march moved to the sidewalk as police continued to shout and pulled a paddywagon over the curb onto the sidewalk near the corner of Fifth and Bellefield. The march began to turn up Bellefield as police picked off one marcher and threatened to arrest everyone else. POG and the TMC had announced they woul dbe dispersing before the arrest was made. This decision was made due to the inability of the organizers to prevent arrest given the number of people present. People will be gathering at the jail; more info to follow soon. Call project 1877 (412-363-1877) for general info.
