The Service Employees International Union organized a massive city-wide banner drop today, Wed. April 7 during rush hour traffic at around 16 locations in and around the city of Pittsburgh.

The banner drops read "Support Janitors: Starving for Healthcare." Participants sat holding the banners for about an hour between 7:30 and 8:30 a.m. Locations included Mt. Washington, bridges over major highways and locations downtown. The banner drop was a part of week long events surrounding a hunger strike that has been going on in front of the Center City Tower, downtown. The janitors are all part of the SEIU and had worked hard to get a good city-wide contract that included lower cost for health insurance. Unfortunately the management at Center City Tower decided not to cooperate with this agreement and took action against the union by firing all their janitors and replacing them with non-unionized workers. If Center City Tower can do this, then technically any other building or all other buildings in the city could follow suit. This is why the SEIU sees this as such an important battle to win. There is a rally tomorrow outside the tower in support of the hunger strikers and acts of civil disobenience will take place.
